rocky shore

description

When we visit the rocky shore at a low tide we get a glimpse of some of the many animals and plants that live along the coastline and sometimes we see visitors from the ocean like the sea jellies.

how do we use this area

The rocky shore has been a popular place for collection. Animals are collected to be eaten, used as bait or put into aquariums.

What sort of things should you remember when visiting the rocky shore?

  • know what is allowed to be collected and how many you are allowed to collect
  • if you move or touch anything return it back the way you found it
  • remember even empty shells are used as homes and shelters by animals
  • leave rockpool animals and plants in the water as they won't live long out of seawater

what else lives here

As the rocky shore shore is on the edge of the land and sea the conditions are continually influenced by the waves and tides.

The animals and plants have adapted to live with these changes.

Marine snails have protective shells. They move over the rocks feeding on the algae and cling tightly when the waves wash over them.

Some of the seaweeds grow in the sheltered rocks pools. Many smaller animals live amongst the seaweed.
