This site is designed to inspire Primary School Teachers and Community Educators to plan and provide marine education. It presents themes, activities and education materials for young learners about the marine and coastal environments.

Initially Seaweek’s educational focus was directed at primary school students but was then extended to secondary and community education. To provide the most effective educational resource, this site is written for those working with primary school students.

Environmental Education

Use successful Seaweek events and activities
as a guide for environmental education.

Seaweek has been successfully promoting marine education for many years. With this site MESA not only aims to highlight some of these past events and activities but also to provide educators and those interested in our natural environments with a guide for being involved in public awareness campaigns. This section presents some of the possible ways to understand, explore and extend an environmental theme.

This booklet has been written with the assistance of the past National Seaweek Coordinators. It was compiled by Barbara Jensen for the Marine Education Society of Australasia. MESA greatly appreciates the work of these past Coordinators and acknowledges their vital role in achieving 12 years of successful public awareness about our coasts and oceans.

Develop a theme

By using educational activities and materials from past Seaweeks, this booklet illustrates some of the major marine education themes and ways of developing these to promote awareness, positive attitudes and actions.

The Table of Contents lists the marine themes that have been the focus of past Seaweeks. Each theme has been divided into three sections:

The first section ‘Understanding the theme’ explains the importance and basic concepts of the theme.

The second section ‘Exploring the theme with Seaweek Events’ describes one Seaweek Event which illustrates a fun and educational way to develop that marine theme.

The last section ‘Extending the theme through Educational Resources’ presents a sample of the relevant educational activities, further resources and personal actions.
