Sea ExChange

National Marine
Educators Association
Sea ExChange is a cooperative international program between two professional marine education associations - the US based National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) and the Australian based Marine Educators Society of Australasia (MESA). Members of these organizations have work duties that are very similar. Hence the development of the Sea ExChange program as initially conceived by Australian Harry Breidahl in 2000.

The aim of Sea ExChange is to develop a web based program of international information exchange that is the first step in creating opportunities for marine educators (and students) in North America and Australasia to establish partnerships by travelling to work with each other.

The program would offer three types of exchange:

  • Partner ExChanges - the original Sea ExChange concept. Participants at similar marine education facilities take turns to travel to, and work with, their partner at his or her facility. These are intended to be short-term, reciprocal visits that form the foundation of an informal but ongoing partnership between participating facilities.

  • Education Group ExChanges - similar to a Partner ExChange. Small groups of students from educational institutions running similar marine programs take turns to travel to, and work with, their partner institutions. They will be short term, reciprocal visits that form the foundation of an informal but ongoing partnership between participating institutions.

  • Job ExChanges - longer term (6 to 12 month) and more traditional job exchanges. These exchanges involve trading places, house etc to conduct each others job for an agreed period of time. As teachers have access to International Teaching Fellowships and similar existing schemes, they are not included here.

Important Note

MESA and NMEA members interested in learning and exchanging information about marine education methods and techniques in the US and Australia can initiate the process by seeking a partner through this website. However, NMEA and MESA do not provide funding for exchanges nor do they accept responsibility beyond this initial contact stage.
